How to Buy a WASSCE Results Checker in Ghana

A WASSCE results checker isn't the result itself. It's a serial number and a PIN, sold as a pair, that WAEC's system accepts up to three times as proof you're allowed to see a candidate's grades.

It works a bit like a scratch card for airtime. You buy the card, reveal the code, and the code does the work on WAEC's own site.

That's why the checker has no index number attached when you buy it, why the code technically works with any candidate's index number even though it shouldn't be shared between two people, and why buying a checker before results are released doesn't do anything early. The code sits inert until you use it against a live result.

What you actually receive

After payment, you get two things by SMS: a serial number, usually 10 to 12 characters, and a 12-digit PIN. Both arrive together, in the same message, within seconds on most orders.

You'll also see them on screen right after checkout. The SMS is a backup copy, not the only copy, and it's worth keeping in case you need to check the result from a different device later.

Buying a checker, step by step

   Choose WASSCE and how many checkers you need

   One checker per candidate. If you're buying for a family with two or three candidates sitting the exam the same year, a family pack costs less per checker than buying them one at a time.

   Pay by Mobile Money

   This is the fastest path for most buyers in Ghana, and the one delivery is built around. Card payment is supported too.

   Wait for the SMS

   It should land within moments. If a few minutes pass and your payment definitely went through, don't pay a second time. Report it instead. A duplicate payment is harder to untangle than a delayed delivery is to investigate.

   Keep the code somewhere you won't lose it

   A screenshot, a note, or simply leaving the SMS unread all work. You'll need the candidate's index number at the point of checking, not at the point of buying.

One checker, one candidate

It's tempting to think one WASSCE checker could cover two siblings sitting the exam the same year. It can't, not safely.

WAEC's system allows exactly three check attempts per serial and PIN pair, counted against whichever index number is entered first. If that's your older child's number, your younger child's attempts are gone before they've used any of them. The code doesn't reset or split by person.

Buying one checker per candidate, using the family pack if you have more than one, is the only way to guarantee each candidate gets their own three attempts.

Buying from a reseller instead of a physical vendor

WAEC sells through authorized resellers as well as directly, and an online reseller can be entirely legitimate. The real question is whether the one you're using is upfront about what it is.

A seller that clearly states it isn't WAEC, shows you how to verify its identity, and gives you a real way to report a problem is behaving the way a legitimate reseller should. Be cautious of any seller that implies it is WAEC itself, or that has no way to reach a real person if something goes wrong.
